" I personally See Madonna as symbol for our pop culture in general"

What is your message when you draw Madonna with a black eye ?I don't think an artwork could or should define one single meaning. I personally see Madonna as symbol for our pop culture in general.
While some people are offended by the violence in the motive and think this is about domestic violence or displaying women as weak, I see that very differently. The eye contact and body language of this woman (it's irrelevant that it's Madonna in this context) feels very strong and confident to me.

Why did you choose Madonna ?My painting is based on Trevor Brown's work and the credit for the original idea belongs to him. As far as I know he did the black and white graphic more than 20 years ago but it is mostly famous for being used by Crystal Castles, a brilliant electronic duo from Toronto. They used his graphic without permission. In 2008 a copyright dispute with Brown followed. Though I enjoy the black and white graphic I always thought that turning this very graphic image to something more realistic and vivid would underline the message and the strong character of it. Neither I have anything against Madonna, nor this is considered to be fan-art. I used Madonna as a symbol.

Do you know if Madonna heard about your work ?Not that I know, no. Her reaction would be interesting though.

Many part of your work are dark, why ?Considering my works dark just because they sometimes involve blood is not well thought out. It is also not what I do on purpose. We see hundreds of pictures everyday and I am bored by super glossy and perfect images. Perfection should never be the goal and this is what especially this artwork is about.

What is your style ?Many artists have their own scheme. I do not consider myself to be part of them. I want to give every idea that I want to express the opportunity to be displayed in the most fitting way, so a particular style would be contra-productive.

What does inspired you ?If something disrupts this flood of "perfect" pictures it catches my attention. I am a big fan of artists like Maurizo Cattelan, who use provocation and unusual images as tools. Nothing is more refreshing than something new, something you haven't already seen a thousand times. I look for the unfamiliar and the unexpected.
